Sedimentary rock

Layers of sediment are buried, squeezed (compaction) and glued by minerals (cementation). It is the only rock type that holds fossils โ€” and it covers about three-quarters of the land surface.

Examples: Sandstone, shale, limestone (often from shells), chalk, coal
