A flowering plant

Click any part of the plant β€” or a button below β€” to see what it does.

  • Root system β€” below ground: anchorage, water and mineral uptake, storage (carrots, beet).
  • Shoot system β€” stem, leaves, buds and flowers: photosynthesis, transport and reproduction.
  • Transport: water moves up the xylem pulled by evaporation from leaves (transpiration β€” the cohesion–tension theory, Dixon & Joly 1894); sugars move in the phloem from leaves to where they are used or stored (mass flow, MΓΌnch 1930).
  • Monocots (grasses, lilies) vs dicots (beans, roses): one vs two seed leaves, parallel vs net veins, flower parts in 3s vs 4s/5s. This model is a dicot (5 petals, net veins, taproot).
