๐ Astronomy frontiers โ 2026
What astronomers are working on now. Each card states the open question, the evidence so far and the methods used โ not results that have not happened yet.
Dark matter & dark energy
Open question: What are the invisible matter (โ 27%) and dark energy (โ 68%) that make up most of the Universe?
Where it stands: No dark-matter particle has been detected yet. In 2024โ25 the DESI survey hinted that dark energy may be weakening over time โ an exciting result still being tested.
Builds on: Galaxy rotation curves (Rubin, 1970s) and the 1998 accelerating Universe.
Galaxy surveys (DESI, Euclid)Underground detectorsLife beyond Earth
Open question: Is there life on Mars, under the icy moons Europa and Enceladus, or on planets around other stars?
Where it stands: Perseverance is collecting rock samples on Mars; Europa Clipper is on its way (arriving 2030); JWST measures exoplanet atmospheres, but no confirmed sign of life exists.
Builds on: Exoplanet discoveries since 1995.
Sample returnSpectroscopyOcean-world missionsThe Hubble tension
Open question: Why do two ways of measuring how fast the Universe expands disagree (โ 67 vs โ 73 km/s per megaparsec)?
Where it stands: JWST has confirmed the nearby measurements; the gap remains. It may point to new physics or to hidden errors.
Builds on: Leavitt's Cepheid ruler and Hubble's law.
Cepheids & supernovaeCosmic microwave backgroundThe first galaxies
Open question: How did the first stars and galaxies form so quickly after the Big Bang?
Where it stands: JWST has found galaxies only โ 300 million years after the Big Bang that are brighter than many models expected.
Builds on: Hubble deep fields and Big Bang cosmology.
Deep infrared imagingSpectroscopyPlanetary defence
Open question: Can we spot and deflect asteroids that might hit Earth?
Where it stands: NASA's DART spacecraft changed the orbit of the moonlet Dimorphos in 2022 โ the first test. NEO Surveyor (launch planned 2027) will hunt for hazardous asteroids.
Builds on: Orbital mechanics; the dinosaur-killing impact.
Sky surveysKinetic impactorsThe Vera Rubin Observatory
Open question: What will a 10-year movie of the whole southern sky reveal?
Where it stands: First images released in 2025; the Legacy Survey of Space and Time will catalogue billions of galaxies and millions of asteroids and changing objects.
Builds on: Two centuries of sky surveys.
